Jesus and the Treasure
“And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Luke 12:32-34
Be honest with yourself right now - what do you treasure?
Is it comfort? Is it safety? Is it family?
Is it the justice of God?
Is it love for your enemy?
Maybe you’re unsure of what you treasure. In the verses above Jesus tells us how we can determine what we are treasuring. He is saying “check your heart”.
What is your heart longing for? Jesus is instructing his followers that the money under their couches, their carefully constructed safety nets of comfort, those things will all be destroyed by moths.
And it is the same for us. The Kingdom of God alone is worth all of our affection. That may sound radical to you - and maybe it is. But we continue to learn through these glimpses of Jesus that he is not like this world. He is constant in his faithfulness and worthy of our trust.
Ask God to help set your heart on His Kingdom and your treasure will be greater than anything you could ever imagine - hint: that treasure is God Himself.
Prayer for Today
God thank you for reminding me of what I should treasure. Help me to identify what my heart is longing for and let it be You that I am after. Thank you for your faithful promises to me.
